Louisiana Reaches $4.8 Million Settlement in Ronald Greene Death

The settlement would resolve a federal wrongful death lawsuit and requires approval by the Louisiana Legislature.

Louisiana officials have agreed to a tentative $4.8 million settlement with the family of Ronald Greene, a Black motorist who died during a 2019 arrest by five white state troopers.

National Attention After Video Evidence

The death gained national attention after video footage obtained by the Associated Press in 2021 showed troopers punching, kicking, and using stun guns on Greene during the arrest. The incident occurred outside Monroe, Louisiana.

DOJ Findings and Reversals

In January 2025, the Justice Department under President Joe Biden found that Louisiana State Police engaged in a statewide pattern of excessive force. Those findings were later rescinded under President Donald Trump's administration.

No Federal Charges

Federal prosecutors declined to bring charges against the troopers in 2024.

The settlement is pending final approval from the Louisiana Legislature before it can take effect.
