Alabama Lawmaker Blasts Supreme Court Ruling, Accuses Clarence Thomas of Undermining Minority Representation

State Representative Juandalynn Givan issued a sharp condemnation of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas in a video posted Monday, following a ruling that struck down a 2023 court-ordered congressional map. That map had created an additional Democratic-leaning seat in Alabama for the 2024 elections.

"The Supreme Court's decision could lead to maps that eliminate two Democratic-held congressional seats."

Key Developments

The ruling opens the door to maps that could wipe out two Democratic-held congressional seats, affecting Representatives Terri Sewell and Shomari Figures.

In her video, Givan accused Thomas of undermining minority representation, using terms such as "Uncle Tom" and "lynchman" to describe him. She also suggested his ancestors were involved in the slave trade.

The Justice's Position

Thomas has consistently opposed "racial apportionment" of congressional seats, arguing that such practices are discriminatory and unconstitutional.

The ruling overruled a map drawn by the 11th Circuit Court, which could have allowed Black voters to elect their preferred candidates in the upcoming May 19 primary.

Potential Electoral Impact

Givan noted the ruling might nullify two seats, potentially requiring a new vote under the newly permitted maps.
