Public Health Advisory for Former Patients of Dr. William Tam
New South Wales Health has issued a public health advisory recommending that all former patients of retired dentist Dr. William Tam undergo testing for bloodborne viruses. The advisory cites concerns about infection control and record-keeping at his former practice. The risk of infection is described as low.
Background and Investigation
Dr. William Tam operated his dental practice at Suite B, 2 Albert Street, Strathfield, in Sydney's inner-west, for more than 25 years. He has since retired and is no longer a registered dentist.
A recent audit conducted by the Dental Council of NSW identified concerns regarding infection control practices at Dr. Tam's premises. According to the Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit, these concerns specifically relate to the inadequate sterilization or cleaning of equipment between patients. The audit also identified poor patient record-keeping.
Due to the insufficient records, health authorities have been unable to contact all former patients directly. The Public Health Unit estimates that "thousands" of people may need testing, with reports suggesting up to 5,000 former patients could be affected, though an exact number is unknown.
Health Advisory and Risk Assessment
NSW Health is advising all patients who were treated by Dr. Tam to get tested for bloodborne viruses, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.
Dr. Leena Gupta, Clinical Director of Public Health for the Sydney Local Health District, stated that while the risk of infection is low, the testing is recommended as a precaution. Dr. Gupta noted that individuals infected with these viruses may not show symptoms for decades, and that effective treatments are available for all three conditions. She emphasized that testing is important for accessing these treatments.
