FBI Director and Senator Trade Accusations in Heated Hearing

FBI Director Kash Patel and Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) exchanged accusations during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday. The exchange centered on allegations of personal misconduct against both officials, including reports of excessive drinking and misuse of government funds.

Allegations Against Director Patel

Senator Van Hollen questioned Director Patel about reports published in The Atlantic alleging excessive drinking on the job and unexplained absences.

Patel denied the allegations, describing them as "unequivocally, categorically false" and a "total farce."

He has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic, which has stated it will defend itself against the suit.

Counter-Allegations by Director Patel

Director Patel responded by accusing Senator Van Hollen of misconduct, including:

  • "Slinging margaritas on the taxpayer dime" during a visit to El Salvador
  • Running up a $7,000 bar tab in Washington, D.C.

Senator Van Hollen denied both accusations. Regarding the El Salvador visit, he stated he visited Kilmar Abrego Garcia to check on his well-being after a deportation he described as wrongful. Reporting indicated that El Salvador President Nayib Bukele staged the meeting with tropical drinks on the table. Regarding the bar tab, Van Hollen stated it was for a holiday reception paid with campaign funds, not taxpayer money.

Background on Related Matters

  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia: An immigrant from El Salvador with protected status in the U.S. was deported by the Trump administration despite a judge's ruling preventing his deportation. Judge Paula Xinis criticized the administration for providing no evidence of gang affiliations before deportation.
  • Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) questioned Patel about a trip to the Milan Winter Olympics, asking about its cost and relevance to FBI duties. Patel stated the trip facilitated the transfer of a Chinese cybercriminal from Italian custody and noted FBI responsibility for Olympic security.
  • Democrats also raised concerns about mass terminations of agents who worked on investigations into President Donald Trump.
  • Republicans praised Patel's leadership and cited crime-fighting achievements.

Agreement to Alcohol Screening

Following the exchange, Director Patel agreed to take the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test if Senator Van Hollen also took it.

Senator Van Hollen posted his results online on May 13, 2026. As of the date of reporting, Director Patel has not yet taken the test.

Statements Regarding Testimony

Senator Van Hollen stated that Director Patel made "provably false statements" and reminded him that lying to Congress is a crime. Director Patel maintained he did not commit perjury.
