FBI Director Patel Clashes with Senator Van Hollen Over Misconduct Allegations
Washington D.C. — FBI Director Kash Patel testified before the Senate Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee on May 12, 2026, engaging in a heated exchange with Senator Chris Van Hollen over reports of alleged misconduct.
The Exchange
Van Hollen cited multiple reports detailing Patel's alleged misuse of FBI resources, alongside a report by The Atlantic that claimed Patel had "bouts of excessive drinking" and job performance issues.
"What we are learning about what's happening at the FBI is anything but normal. Director Patel, as you ask for more taxpayer resources, we cannot look away from the credible, extremely troubling reports about your misconduct at the FBI."
Patel denied the allegations outright, calling the report a "total farce." He has previously stated he has "never been intoxicated on the job" and has filed a $250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic.
A Heated Back-and-Forth
In a tense moment, Patel claimed—without providing evidence—that Van Hollen was "slinging margaritas" with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a migrant who was erroneously deported to El Salvador.
Van Hollen had visited Abrego Garcia in El Salvador and pushed back, stating that neither he nor Abrego Garcia consumed any drinks that were placed on the table, as documented in official photographs.
Patel’s Opening Statement
In his opening remarks, Patel praised FBI agents for their accomplishments, highlighting their response to a shooting at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner.
He appeared before the subcommittee alongside other Department of Justice agency heads to discuss budget requests for the 2027 fiscal year.
Previous Testimony
Patel previously testified before Congress in September 2025, facing questions about the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk and his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
