Warriors Hit by Double Blow: Boyd Injury, Metcalf Exit
The New Zealand Warriors have received two significant roster updates that will reshape their squad for the 2026 season and beyond.
Injury Update: Tanah Boyd
Halfback Tanah Boyd is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 NRL season due to a suspected ACL injury.
Boyd sustained a non-contact knee injury during the Warriors' match against the Brisbane Broncos. He was visibly emotional as he left the field. Coach Andrew Webster stated that the early indications regarding the injury are not positive.
This is a devastating setback for the Warriors. Boyd had been performing at a career-best level, holding the No. 7 jersey and contributing to the team's position of second on the NRL ladder.
Warriors Halves DepthFollowing the injury to Boyd and the pending departure of Metcalf, the Warriors' available halves options on their roster include:
- Luke Hanson
- Jett Cleary
- Jye Linnane
- Te Maire Martin
Player Transfer: Luke Metcalf
Playmaker Luke Metcalf has agreed to a three-year contract with the St. George Illawarra Dragons, beginning next season.
Luke Metcalf will depart the New Zealand Warriors at the conclusion of the 2026 season. He has signed a three-year contract with the St. George Illawarra Dragons, reportedly valued at approximately $900,000 per season. The deal will keep him at the Dragons through the end of the 2029 NRL season.
Player Details
- Age: 27
- Position: Playmaker (capable of playing five-eighth and halfback)
- Background: Orara Valley junior; debuted with the Cronulla Sharks before playing for the Warriors.
- Notable: Led the Dally M Medal voting before an ACL injury ended his prior season.
In a club statement, Dragons CEO Tim Watsford said: "Luke is a player who brings creativity and confidence to our football program. To be able to bring him into the club for the next three years is a significant outcome for us. He has shown he can influence games with the ball in hand, and we believe his best football is still in front of him."
Metcalf said: "I’m really excited to be joining the Dragons and grateful for the opportunity. It’s a proud club with a huge supporter base. I intend to give my all to the Warriors for the remainder of this season before taking the next step in my career."
Background on Departure
Reports from NRL360 indicated Metcalf requested a meeting with the Warriors to discuss his future. The Warriors reportedly viewed Metcalf as a potential number 6 (five-eighth), while Metcalf has preferred to play as a number 7 (halfback). Tanah Boyd had been performing as the team's primary halfback in Metcalf's absence following Metcalf's hamstring injury return in Round 4. Metcalf is expected to play off the bench in the upcoming match against the Broncos.
Dragons Recruitment Context
Metcalf will join Scott Drinkwater, Keaon Koloamatangi, and Phillip Sami as new recruits for the Dragons next season. Other players tied to the Dragons through at least 2029 include Hamish Stewart and Dylan Egan. Kyle Flanagan and Daniel Atkinson are among the other halves under contract at the club.
Additional Interest: Cameron McInnes
Separately, Love Rugby League reports that the Melbourne Storm have expressed interest in Cameron McInnes after a deal with the Perth Bears fell through. Other interested parties include the PNG Chiefs and York Knights. McInnes has stated he is keen to continue playing and would prefer to stay with the Cronulla Sharks but is aware of the circumstances.
