Police have confirmed a man died after falling from a sixth-floor hotel balcony in Spring Hill on Saturday evening, in an incident captured on police body cameras.
Incident Details
Police were called to a hotel on Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill, Brisbane, at approximately 5:50 PM on Saturday evening. The call was in response to a report of individuals wanted in connection with a series of property crimes.
Upon arrival, officers entered a sixth-floor hotel unit and identified themselves. An 18-year-old man attempted to flee by climbing over the balcony to a lower level. He fell six storeys and sustained critical injuries. Police administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until paramedics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Individuals
The deceased was one of four people in the hotel room. The other three individuals were taken into custody but have not been charged as of the time of reporting. A family liaison officer has been appointed.
Investigation
The incident was recorded on police body cameras. The Ethical Standards Command has launched a full investigation, which will be independently overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission. The State Coroner has been notified.
Officer Welfare
Superintendent Simon Taylor stated that responding officers have been provided with welfare support. He described the incident as "confronting" for the officers involved.
