Tensions Flare in the Gulf: Drone Incursion in Kuwait, Cargo Ship Struck Off Qatar

Kuwait Drone Incursion

Kuwait's military reported that it responded to a drone incursion into its airspace early Sunday. Brig. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi, a Defense Ministry spokesman, stated that hostile drones entered Kuwaiti airspace and forces responded according to established procedures. No casualties were reported.

In a separate incident, Kuwait reported that its air defense systems intercepted incoming missiles and drones late Wednesday.

According to U.S. Central Command, the attack on Kuwait was attributed to Iran and constitutes a ceasefire violation. Kuwait reportedly intercepted missiles launched by Iran on Wednesday night.

Iran acknowledged an attack around Bandar Abbas International Airport and stated that it launched a retaliatory attack on an air base that it claimed had conducted the assault. Iran did not specify whether the base was in Kuwait.

Cargo Ship Incident Off Qatar

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) reported that a cargo ship was struck by an unknown projectile 23 nautical miles northeast of Doha, Qatar, on Sunday. The impact caused a small fire, which was extinguished. No casualties were reported. The owner and origin of the ship have not been disclosed, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Context and Statements

These incidents occur amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran following a ceasefire in their war. The ceasefire has been repeatedly tested, with Iran restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the US imposing a blockade of Iranian ports.

On Friday, the US struck two Iranian oil tankers, stating that the vessels attempted to breach a blockade of Iranian ports. The US also conducted strikes on missile launch sites and minelaying boats in southern Iran earlier in the week.

Negotiations are ongoing over a potential deal to end the war, reopen the strait, and roll back Iran's nuclear program.

A key sticking point is the fate of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which the UN nuclear agency reports exceeds 440 kilograms at up to 60% purity.

Statements from involved parties:

  • Iranian military spokesman Brig. Gen. Akrami Nia said forces are on "full readiness" to protect nuclear sites where uranium is stored, citing possible infiltration or heliborne operations.

  • Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy reiterated a warning that attacks on Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels would be met with a "heavy assault" on US bases or enemy ships.

  • US President Donald Trump has threatened to resume full-scale bombing if Iran does not accept an agreement to reopen the strait and roll back its nuclear program.

  • The Trump administration maintains that the ceasefire remains in effect.

Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz has affected global oil prices.
