Former Knox Grammar Teacher Convicted of Procuring a Child for Sex
William Roberto Gulson, a former teacher at Sydney's Knox Grammar School, was convicted on Friday of procuring a child for sexual activity. He received a three-year Community Correction Order with 400 hours of community service and was placed on the NSW Child Protection Register for eight years.
"The offender's moral culpability was high due to his profession and knowledge of child vulnerabilities." — Judge Hugh Donnelly
How the Offense Unfolded
The incident took place in August 2024, when Gulson, then 27, chatted on Grindr with a profile claiming to be a 15-year-old boy. Gulson discussed sexual acts and arranged a meeting that ultimately did not occur.
The profile was initially created by a 15-year-old, who later handed control to a 14-year-old. The teenager stated the purpose was to "catch pedos."
Legal Arguments and Psychological Evidence
Gulson's defense argued for no conviction and the lightest possible penalty, citing a psychologist's opinion that Gulson did not have a sexual interest in children.
Judge Hugh Donnelly gave this opinion little weight, finding beyond reasonable doubt that Gulson did possess such an interest.
Judges Remarks on Culpability and Risk
- Moral culpability: Judge Donnelly stated Gulson's responsibility was high, given his profession and awareness of child vulnerabilities.
- Risk of reoffending: Assessed as above average.
Appeal Filed
Gulson has since filed an appeal against the conviction.
