Indonesia expands nickel industry, becoming top global supplier

Indonesia Now Dominates Global Nickel Production

Indonesia now produces over half of the world's nickel supply, up from negligible levels a decade ago.

The nation’s meteoric rise in nickel production has fundamentally reshaped global supply chains. Most nickel is used for stainless steel, while a smaller, but rapidly growing, portion goes to batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and data centers.

A Strategic Shift in the Green-Energy Race

The Indonesian government is aggressively positioning itself as a major player in the green-energy transition. By controlling the supply of this critical mineral, the country aims to secure a central role in the global shift away from fossil fuels. Nickel is a key component in both stainless steel and lithium-ion batteries, making it indispensable for modern infrastructure and clean energy technology.

Environmental and Social Trade-offs

However, this industrial expansion has not come without cost. Environmental and livelihood concerns have been raised regarding nickel mining practices. Critics point to deforestation, water pollution, and disruptions to local communities as significant downsides of the rapid development.
