View source

Belgium has secured a spot in the United Cup semi-finals for the first time, progressing after winning their Group B tie against Canada and subsequently defeating the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals. The team's advancement was clinched through decisive singles victories by Zizou Bergs and Elise Mertens in both stages of the tournament.

Group Stage: Belgium vs. Canada

In Sydney, Team Belgium defeated Team Canada 3-0 to emerge as Group B winners. This victory was crucial as Belgium required a clean sweep against Canada to secure their top standing, following Canada's prior sweep against China, a team that had earlier defeated Belgium.

Singles Matches vs. Canada:
  • Zizou Bergs vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime: Zizou Bergs secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over World No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime in one hour and 28 minutes. This marked Bergs' second career win against a Top-10 ranked opponent. During the match, Bergs saved all five break points he faced.
  • Elise Mertens vs. Victoria Mboko: Elise Mertens defeated 19-year-old Victoria Mboko with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and five minutes. Mertens maintained a strong service game in the first set, holding serve at love in her initial four service games and breaking Mboko to love in the sixth game. In the final set, Mertens broke serve in the fourth game and won 93 percent of points played behind her first serve throughout the match. Mboko did not create any break point opportunities in the decisive third set.
Mixed Doubles vs. Canada:
  • The tie was concluded when Bergs and Mertens partnered to win the mixed doubles match against Cleeve Harper and Victoria Mboko, with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, which confirmed Belgium's top position in the group.

Quarter-Finals: Belgium vs. Czech Republic

Belgium advanced to the semi-finals by establishing an insurmountable 2-0 lead against the Czech Republic in their quarter-final tie.

Singles Matches vs. Czech Republic:
  • Zizou Bergs vs. Jakub Mensik: Zizou Bergs defeated Jakub Mensik 6-2, 7-6(4) in one hour and 40 minutes, marking his second consecutive victory in the tournament. In the second set, Bergs had two opportunities to serve out the match, which he did not convert. Mensik subsequently registered a service break to level the score and another at 5-6, before Bergs ultimately closed the set in a tie-break.
  • Elise Mertens vs. Barbora Krejcikova: Elise Mertens secured a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 victory over two-time major singles champion Barbora Krejcikova in two hours and 33 minutes. After an exchange of early breaks in the third set, both players held serve until Mertens broke in the 11th game, then held serve to conclude the match. Mertens, a former WTA World No. 1 doubles player, responded to dropping the first set by winning the second set 6-1. Mertens recorded 12 aces and converted 80% of her break-point opportunities, compared to Krejcikova's six aces and 20% break-point conversion rate.

Belgium is scheduled to compete against Switzerland in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will feature the United States against the winner of the quarter-final match between Australia and Poland.
