Sri Lanka Grapples with 30% Surge in Dengue Cases in 2026
Sri Lanka has recorded 35,228 dengue cases and 20 related deaths as of 2026, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU). This total represents a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2025, which saw over 51,000 cases for the full year.

Case Distribution
The Western Province accounts for approximately 50% of all reported cases. The districts with the highest disease burdens include:
- Colombo
- Gampaha
- Kalutara
- Matara
- Galle
- Ratnapura
As of May 2, 2026, the NDCU reported 25,082 cases and 12 deaths. By late May, an additional 8,600 cases had been recorded, bringing the May total to over 8,600.
Contributing Factors
Health officials cite increased rainfall and flooding during the southwest monsoon season as factors contributing to the rise in cases. Hospital capacities are reported to be under strain.
Government Response
The Ministry of Health has authorized local Medical Officer of Health (MOH) offices to take legal action against premises found to be neglecting mosquito breeding sites. A special islandwide mosquito control and clean-up program is scheduled from June 8 to June 10, 2026.
Public Health Advice
Consultant Community Physician Dr. Prashila Samaraweera advised the public to seek medical attention if fever persists for more than two days, noting that early diagnosis helps determine if a patient has dengue.
