Travis Bazzana Promoted to Majors; Debuts Against Rays

The Cleveland Guardians promoted Travis Bazzana, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft, to the major league roster. He made his debut on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays. In the same series, the Washington Nationals defeated the Guardians 10-2 in a game featuring two Australian-born players.

Roster Moves

The Guardians promoted Travis Bazzana from Triple-A Columbus. To open a spot on the active roster, the team optioned infielder Juan Brito to the minors. No corresponding move to the 40-man roster was required following the waiver of Kolby Allard.

Bazzana's promotion occurred three weeks after shortstop Gabriel Arias sustained a left hamstring strain. That injury moved Brayan Rocchio from second base to shortstop. Brito, who was called up after Arias's injury, recorded five hits in his first three games but subsequently had four hits in 39 at-bats over his next 12 games. He also made four errors in 123 1/3 innings.

Bazzana's Minor League Performance

Bazzana posted a batting average of .287 with an on-base percentage of .422 and a slugging percentage of .511 in 24 games at Triple-A Columbus. His statistics included:

  • Two home runs
  • 11 doubles
  • Two triples
  • Eight stolen bases in 10 attempts
  • A walk rate of 17.9%
  • A strikeout rate of 21.4%

He leads the International League with nine doubles and is tied for first with 15 extra-base hits. Two oblique injuries in 2024 limited him to 77 games across the top two minor league levels.

MLB Debut

Bazzana made his major league debut as the starting second baseman, batting seventh against the Tampa Bay Rays. He went 0-for-2 with two walks. The Guardians lost the game 1-0, extending their losing streak to four games. He chose the song "Down Under" by Men at Work for his walk-up music at the suggestion of his parents.

Prospect Incentive and Service Time

Bazzana qualifies for the Prospect Promotion Incentive as a consensus top-100 prospect. He cannot accrue a full service year solely through time on the MLB roster but could earn one by finishing top two in American League Rookie of the Year voting. The Guardians are not eligible for an extra draft choice if he wins Rookie of the Year because the promotion occurred after the second week of April. If Bazzana remains on the MLB roster, he would be eligible for Super Two arbitration after 2028.

Arias's initial recovery timeline of 4-8 weeks suggests a potential return in May; he could reclaim the shortstop role.

Game Featuring Two Australian Players

In a subsequent game at Progressive Field, the Washington Nationals defeated the Cleveland Guardians 10-2. This matchup featured two Australian-born players: Curtis Mead of the Nationals and Travis Bazzana of the Guardians. According to reports, it was the first time two Australian-born players started an opposing Major League Baseball game since 2011.

Curtis Mead hit two home runs. His first home run, following a leadoff home run by James Wood and a double by Luis Garcia Jr., gave the Nationals a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mead hit a cutter at the bottom of the strike zone 122 meters into the left field bleachers. In the fifth inning, Mead hit another home run to left field, making the score 8-1. This was his first career multi-home run game. Mead, playing third base, has three home runs in his last three starts and is batting .241 this season.

Bazzana doubled in the bottom of the third inning for his only hit of the game. At that time, the Nationals led 6-1.

Context on Australian Players

Both Mead and Bazzana previously played in the Australian Baseball League with the Adelaide Giants and Sydney Blue Sox, respectively. There are currently three active Australian players in Major League Baseball: Mead, Bazzana, and Oakland pitcher Jack O'Loughlin.

Draft Class Context

Bazzana is the 14th player from the 2024 draft class to reach the majors, the ninth position player, and the seventh top-10 pick. During the World Baseball Classic, he had two hits and a home run for Australia in a 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei.
