David Sharpe Departs Perth Bears Before First Match
The NRL's newest franchise has lost its inaugural football director, David Sharpe, before the team has even taken the field.
The news was released during Thursday night's NRL match between the Canberra Raiders and Wests Tigers.
A Sudden Departure
In a club statement, Sharpe said: "I have chosen to leave the Perth Bears for a new opportunity. It's been a privilege to help lead the establishment of the club, and particularly the football department and Bear Tracks academy."
He acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision but expressed confidence in the club's future.
"It has been a difficult decision but the football department is now well established. Western Australia remains a unique and vital opportunity for rugby league to become a truly national game."
Sharpe concluded his statement by offering his support: "I will be cheering along with all supporters when the Perth Bears team takes the field in round one next year."
Tension Brewed Behind the Scenes
The departure comes after reports of friction. Two weeks prior, The Australian reported that Sharpe had fallen out with staff, including CEO Anthony De Ceglie.
On April 10, head coach Mal Meninga denied any issues, stating "Everything's going well" and revealing that board meetings had not discussed the matter.
Club Acknowledges Contribution
Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie acknowledged Sharpe's contributions in a separate statement:
"In David's time at the Perth Bears and under his leadership the football department successfully established itself, developed our team values and strategy, recruited 16 exceptional players (with more to come), established a Bears Tracks academy and through his efforts we have a strong foundation for success. We wish David all the very best for the future."
Chairman Ben Morton also expressed gratitude, saying the club "completely respect" Sharpe's decision.
