Prince Harry Makes Unannounced Visit to Kyiv

Kyiv, Ukraine — Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, arrived in Kyiv on April 23, 2026, for an unannounced visit that coincided with the European Union's formal approval of a €90 billion ($148 billion) loan to Ukraine and new sanctions on Russia.

Visit Details and Schedule

Prince Harry arrived at a Kyiv railway station on Thursday morning after traveling from Poland by overnight train. This marks his third trip to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022.

His scheduled activities included:

  • Addressing the Kyiv Security Forum, a conference of diplomats and military officials discussing challenges facing Ukraine
  • Participating in a panel with Ukrainian war veterans
  • Visiting the Halo Trust charity, a de-mining organization previously sponsored by his late mother, Princess Diana
  • Meeting with Ukrainian participants of the Invictus Games Foundation, which aids wounded veterans through sports

Statements from Prince Harry

During his address at the Kyiv Security Forum, Prince Harry made the following statements:

"President Putin, no nation benefits from the continued loss of life... There is still a moment — now — to stop this war."

Referring to the United States, he said: "This is a moment for American leadership."

He stated that the United States has a singular role in Ukraine's security, noting that when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, "America was part of the assurance that Ukraine's sovereignty and borders would be respected."

He described the war as "an ideological battle between liberal democracies and authoritarian foes."

He described Ukraine as "a country bravely and successfully defending Europe's eastern flank" and said "it matters that we don't lose sight of the significance of that."

Regarding the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, he stated that under international law, this can constitute an act of genocide.

Reactions from Other Political Figures

Former U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Prince Harry's remarks, saying:

"I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that's for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry. But I appreciate his advice very much."

Trump also asked about Prince Harry and his wife, saying, "How's he doing? How's his wife? Please give her my regards."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said:

"While Russia doubles down on its aggression, we are doubling down on our support to the brave Ukrainian nation."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on social media that the loan "will strengthen our army, make Ukraine more resilient, and enable us to fulfil our social obligations."

Zelenskyy was in Cyprus at the time of the visit, reportedly to discuss the loan, and had previously warned about the risk of global attention shifting from the war in Ukraine to conflicts in the Middle East.

Russian diplomats denounced the new sanctions as lacking UN legitimacy and infringing on the rights of third countries.

European Union Loan and Sanctions

The European Union formally approved a €90 billion ($148 billion) loan to Ukraine and imposed new sanctions on Russia.

Key details of the loan:

  • Approved by EU ambassadors after Hungary lifted its veto, which had delayed approval for several months
  • Intended to cover approximately two-thirds of Ukraine's financial needs for the next two years
  • Half of the funds will be disbursed this year, with the remainder in 2027
  • Approximately €17 billion per year is earmarked for general budget needs such as health and education; the bulk is designated for military spending

Economists had stated that Ukraine would start running out of money by June if the loan was not disbursed.

Context

The British royal family typically avoids speaking on political matters, though senior royals have expressed support for Ukraine. Prince Harry's language was more explicit than previous royal statements regarding the conflict.
