Richard Pusey sues Victoria Police over Eastern Freeway crash that killed four officers

Richard Pusey has filed a civil lawsuit against Victoria Police, alleging the force exposed him to injury during the 2020 Eastern Freeway crash that killed four police officers. The writ, filed in the Supreme Court, claims police breached their duty of care by directing him to an unsafe location on the freeway and failing to ensure his safety.

Pusey states his Porsche was destroyed and he was exposed to a traumatic crash.

In a separate claim, Pusey also seeks damages for false imprisonment. He alleges police arrested him at his home in April 2020 despite plans for voluntary attendance. He claims the arrest was unnecessary, disproportionate, and unlawful.

Additionally, he alleges police disclosed personal information, including his address, to others, causing distress and concern for his and his family's safety.

Pusey is seeking aggravated damages for his treatment after the crash, including being publicly identified and exposed to media attention. He demands compensation for psychiatric injury, loss of income, and loss of earning capacity.

Victoria Police stated they reject the assertions and will defend the matter.

Background

Pusey was convicted in 2021 of outraging public decency for filming the dying officers and using derogatory language. He was sentenced to 10 months in jail.

The crash occurred when police had pulled Pusey over for speeding and were discussing impounding his vehicle. A truck driven by Mohinder Singh crashed into them, killing the officers.
