Western Australian Neurological Health Strategy in Development

One in three Western Australians are affected by neurological conditions, which can impact the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. These conditions often have lifelong effects on individuals, families and communities.

To address this, WA Health is developing the Western Australian Neurological Health Strategy (WANHS). The strategy aims to improve access to coordinated care for people with neurological conditions and will guide future service planning, policy development and access to care. The final strategy is expected by mid-2027.

“The strategy will strengthen support by ensuring care is better connected, easier to navigate and informed by patient and family needs.” — WA Health Director General Dr Shirley Bowen

Strategy Development and Consultation

Dr Bowen stated that continual improvement in services is essential for supporting people with neurological conditions. She noted that consultation is a critical first step to understand current service delivery, identify gaps, and determine how to better meet future needs.

The strategy is being informed by a public online survey and targeted consultations. These aim to identify current strengths, challenges and future priorities for neurological care in Western Australia.
