Sunshine Coast Council Launches Invasive Weeds Management Program

The Sunshine Coast Council has initiated a new invasive weeds management project, funded by its Environment Levy. This five-year program aims to demonstrate effective weed control strategies to the community through a series of free guided walks.

The project investigates new technologies, including AI-assisted weed detection using drones and environmental DNA water sampling, to improve weed management outcomes.

Free Guided Walks at Maleny Demonstration Site

A key part of the community outreach will be four free guided walks at the Maleny demonstration site. These sessions will use real-world examples to cover essential topics:

  • April 30 & May 1: Project planning and landscape assessment
  • May 7 & May 8: Tools, techniques, and innovation results

The walks are open to a wide range of participants, including suburban gardeners and property owners. The council states the program can help participants save time, money, and protect wildlife habitat.

Project Goals and Innovations

The primary goals of the project are to remove invasive weeds, restore native plants, and demonstrate effective weed management to the community. Since its inception in 2021, the project has focused on integrating research and new technology into practical weed control.

The council has developed a clear, four-step process for effective weed management:

  1. Setting clear goals
  2. Prioritizing management areas
  3. Identifying site constraints
  4. Selecting the right tools and techniques

Resources for the Community

Beyond the guided walks, the project offers additional resources for those interested. The council’s project page includes an informative StoryMap and a resource library for further learning.
