Ngannou Still Eyes Jones Fight, Recalls UFC Negotiations

Francis Ngannou has reiterated his desire to face Jon Jones before retiring, while reflecting on his departure from the UFC. The former heavyweight champion suggested the prospect of the super-fight was used as leverage during contract talks.

"It was never really on the table, so I don't have to be disappointed. The only time that he seems like a possibility was when he was used as bait."

Ngannou stated that the fight with Jones remains his primary goal, but he is open to other opponents.

"Jon Jones is the fight that I really want to have before my retirement. But other than that, it could be anybody, I don't care. As long as it's a fight."

The Sticking Point: Contracts

The breakdown in Ngannou's relationship with the UFC stemmed from contract negotiations. He clarifies that his issue was not with contracts in general, but with their specific terms.

"I have no problem with contracts. I have a problem with the way that the contract is being used... It has to be right and fair, that's all that I'm saying."

Current Status and Future

Ngannou is scheduled to fight Philipe Lins on May 16. After that bout, he is presumably free to negotiate new contracts. While he is no longer with the PFL, he has not ruled out a potential return to the UFC under the right circumstances.

He has stated he would consider a UFC return if it "makes sense for all parties involved."

Background: A Fight That Never Materialized

  • Francis Ngannou was the UFC heavyweight champion from March 2021 to January 2023.
  • During his reign, a potential fight with Jon Jones, who was teasing a move to heavyweight, was a major topic of public discussion.
  • Both fighters publicly expressed interest, but a deal was never finalized. UFC CEO Dana White has attributed the fight not happening to both parties at different times.
  • After defending his title in January 2022, Ngannou entered negotiations for a new UFC contract. These talks included discussions about a potential Jones fight and the ability to pursue boxing matches.
  • No agreement was reached, and Ngannou became a free agent in January 2023.
  • Jones later moved to heavyweight and won the UFC championship. Ngannou joined the PFL, fought once, and parted ways with the organization in March 2024.
