A playable beta for the upcoming video game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is now available. The beta offers a one-hour demo of the game, which is a third-person shooter with role-playing elements set within The Expanse franchise universe. The full game is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in spring 2027.

How to Access the Beta

Beta access is tied exclusively to pre-ordering specific editions of the game. The available options on Owlcat Studios' online store are:

  • Base Game: Priced at $50. Does not include beta access.
  • Miller's Pack Edition: Priced at $80. Includes beta access.
  • Collector's Edition: Priced at $289. Includes beta access.

Gameplay & Setting Overview

Developed by Owlcat Studios, the game's narrative is set to run concurrently with—but not directly overlap—the events of The Expanse books and television series. The demo includes references to major series events, such as the destruction of the ship The Canterbury.

The beta demo allows players to experience several core gameplay features:

  • Choose from four pre-made character builds with different skill sets.
  • Select a character origin (Earther or Belter backgrounds).
  • Engage in combat featuring cover-based shooting and zero-gravity segments, including combat on a station's exterior hull.
  • Utilize a skill tree system for character progression.
  • Make dialogue choices within a branching system, where decisions affect story outcomes.
  • Customize equipment (weapons, gadgets, armor) during missions.
  • Explore environments and hack terminals.

A Look at the Demo Content

In the demo, a specific gameplay decision leads to one of two outcomes: convincing station security to fight results in their deaths and the station's destruction, while convincing them to stand down allows the station to survive under hostile control.

The demo is set on a mercenary spacebase near Jupiter. Players control an unnamed mercenary working for Pinkwater Security, who, along with a twin sibling, are the sole survivors of a mission on the space station Eros. Gameplay involves reporting to a station master, encountering hostile forces from the company Protogen, and fighting to escape to a ship.

A key narrative choice involves deciding whether to convince the station's security forces to fight the hostile boarders. This choice leads to two distinct outcomes:

  • If security fights, they are killed and the station is destroyed.
  • If security stands down, the station and its personnel survive but are held at gunpoint.
