Michael Cheika Reportedly Interested in Dragons Head Coach Role
Michael Cheika, the former Wallabies head coach and current Sydney Roosters assistant, has reportedly expressed interest in becoming the head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons. The report, originating from Code Sports, comes as the Dragons are led by interim coach Dean Young.
According to Matty Johns of Fox League, Michael Cheika "would be great for the Dragons" and has "the ability to unite the club."
A Varied and Distinguished Coaching Career
Cheika brings a wealth of high-level experience from both rugby codes. He coached the Australian national rugby union team, the Wallabies, from 2014 to 2019, guiding them to the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.
His international coaching resume also includes leading the Argentina national rugby union team in 2022 and 2023, and coaching the Lebanon national rugby league team during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. He has been serving as an assistant coach at the Sydney Roosters in the NRL since 2025.
Endorsements and Ambition
Cheika's potential move has drawn positive comments from within the game. Roosters player Luke Keary noted that Cheika has "the aura of a well-travelled man who's coached in different parts of the world."
The interest appears to be mutual. Michael Cheika reportedly told Code Sports he is interested in securing an NRL head coach position in the future.
