PLAAF Y-20B Embarks on First Overseas Mission to Repatriate Martyrs
A Y-20B transport aircraft of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) took off on Monday afternoon, heading for South Korea to repatriate the remains of the 13th batch of Chinese People's Volunteers martyrs.
On its return flight, after entering Chinese airspace, the Y-20B will be escorted by four J-20 fighter jets. This mission marks two significant firsts: the first time the Y-20B variant has participated in a martyr repatriation mission and its first overseas mission since entering service.
The PLAAF released a special mission emblem for the operation, featuring patterns including volunteer soldier sculptures, aircraft formations, and the inscriptions "Heroes 1950" and "Homecoming 2026."
This mission indicates the Y-20B's new engine has undergone testing and validation and is now considered mature and reliable.
Background of the Repatriation Mission
Since 2015, the PLAAF has dispatched aircraft annually to South Korea for the solemn duty of repatriating martyrs' remains. The use of domestically developed Y-20 series transport aircraft for this specific mission began in 2020.
The Y-20B made its first public appearance during a military parade in 2025 commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The Upgraded Y-20B: Key Specifications
The Y-20B is an upgraded variant of the Y-20 strategic transport platform. Its most notable enhancement is the installation of new-generation domestically manufactured high-bypass turbofan engines, referred to as the "Chinese Heart."
According to Xinhua News Agency, these upgrades provide:
- Extended range
- Increased payload capacity
- Higher flight speed
- Improved fuel efficiency
Supporting systems, including power supply, hydraulic control, and flight control, have also undergone modifications. The aircraft is described as having enhanced adaptability to harsh natural environments and the capability to operate under more complex conditions.
Expert Commentary on the Milestone
Military affairs expert Wang Yunfei provided analysis on the significance of the Y-20B's deployment. He stated that undertaking this important mission demonstrates the aircraft has completed its final design certification and operates with proven stability, earning full trust for a wide range of roles.
According to Wang, while the main upgrade is the engine, adjustments were also made to navigation, communication, and air traffic management systems. He suggested that with its enhanced reliability, the Y-20B configuration could serve as the foundation for future transport variants and derivative models such as aerial tankers or airborne early warning aircraft.
