Wembanyama Enters Concussion Protocol, Out for Game 2

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has entered the NBA's concussion protocol and was ruled out of Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night following a fall in the second quarter. The Spurs lost the game 106-103, tying the Western Conference first-round series at 1-1. Wembanyama's status for Game 3 on Friday is pending further evaluation under the league's return-to-play protocol.

Incident and Immediate Aftermath

The incident occurred with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter. After contact with Portland's Jrue Holiday, Wembanyama fell face-first to the court, with his jaw making contact with the floor. He remained on the court for approximately 30 seconds before sitting up. Following a timeout, he left the court area.

"He has a concussion. He's in the protocol. We'll take the proper and appropriate steps," stated Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who later confirmed the diagnosis.

Concussion Protocol and Potential Return

The NBA's concussion protocol requires a player to be removed from the game for evaluation. A formal diagnosis initiates a mandatory 48-hour period of rest and recovery before the player can begin a stepwise return-to-play evaluation.

The player must pass neurological tests and be cleared by both a team doctor and the league's concussion protocol director before returning to game action.

Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Friday in Portland. Coach Johnson did not speculate on Wembanyama's availability for that game.

Game Impact and Statistics

Before exiting, Wembanyama recorded 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 assist in 12 minutes of play. He was replaced by Luke Kornet, who played 28 minutes and recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds.

  • In Game 1, Wembanyama scored 35 points in a Spurs victory.
  • During the regular season, he averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game.
  • The Spurs finished the regular season with the league's second-best record and made their first playoff appearance since 2019.

Team Context and Reactions

Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 center from France, was named the unanimous Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year on Monday. He missed 18 games during the regular season, including all three matchups against the Trail Blazers. The Spurs posted a 12-6 record in games he did not play.

"We've all got to step up. We know what Vic brings to the table. We've played without him for a couple games this year. It's going to be next man up," said Spurs guard Devin Vassell.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Tiago Splitter described the play: "It was scary. I saw the images. It was not good."
