Google Rolls Out "Continued Conversation" for Gemini for Home
Google has begun an early access release of a "Continued Conversation" feature for its Gemini for Home service. This update allows users to ask follow-up questions without repeating a wake phrase and is being made available across all supported languages and regions.
The new feature is designed to enable more contextual interactions with the Gemini AI assistant on Google Home devices.
How the Feature Works
After an initial query using the "Hey Google" wake phrase and a reply from the assistant, the device's microphone will remain active for a short time. Visual indicators, such as pulsing or glowing lights on the hardware, will signal that the user can continue speaking.
- The feature is intended to allow Gemini to retain context as a conversation progresses.
- Google states the update includes improved detection of "side-talk," which aims to better distinguish between follow-up questions directed at the assistant and other conversations in the room.
How to Get Access
The Continued Conversation feature is currently in an early access phase.
- Access is limited to users who have registered for the early access program.
- Eligible users must manually enable the feature within the Google Home app under the settings for "Gemini for Home voice assistant."
- Google is rolling out the feature for all Gemini for Home voice assistant languages and in all supported regions. This marks an expansion from a previous, more limited availability of a similar feature under the older Google Assistant platform.
Background and Context
Google has been positioning Gemini for Home as a successor to the Google Assistant platform since the fall. The introduction of this feature represents a significant upgrade to the newer Gemini service.
