Crocodile Attack at Remote Kimberley Campsite

A man in his 20s was hospitalized after being attacked by a crocodile at a remote camping area in Western Australia's Kimberley region. The incident occurred on a beach near Hidden Creek, approximately 50 kilometers north of Broome. The man was transferred to Perth for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities are investigating the attack.

This is the second reported crocodile attack in the region in less than five months.

Incident Details

The attack occurred on Saturday, April 18, at a camping spot adjacent to Hidden Creek, north of the Coulomb Point Nature Reserve on the Dampier Peninsula. The area is accessed via the unsealed Manari Road. According to one source, the man was asleep during the early morning incident.

Medical Response and Condition

Following the attack, the man was taken to Broome Hospital in stable condition. He was subsequently airlifted to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

Official Investigation

The Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) confirmed it was notified of the incident on Monday, April 21. The department stated the attack involved a large crocodile. Parks and Wildlife Service staff have spoken with a relative of the man and intend to discuss the incident further with those involved. The DBCA stated it will undertake a site visit as part of its investigation.

Safety Advisories and Regional Context

The DBCA issued a warning for people to be vigilant when in "Croc Country." The department advises that saltwater crocodiles occur throughout the Kimberley and are active year-round.

Safety recommendations include camping at least 50 meters from the water's edge, keeping children and pets away from the shoreline, and reporting crocodiles that pose a risk to public safety.

In January 2024, a man received lacerations from a 3-meter saltwater crocodile near the La Djardarr Bay Community on the Dampier Peninsula. Another attack occurred in 2024 when a man was bitten by a 3-meter saltwater crocodile while spearfishing near islands off the coast of One Arm Point. Local rangers have reported an increase in crocodile activity in the area.
