Severe Storm Damages Homes and Cuts Power in Bunbury

A powerful storm front struck the coastal city of Bunbury, Western Australia, around 8:00 PM local time on Tuesday. The city is located approximately 170 kilometers south of Perth.

The damage was concentrated in the East Bunbury area, near the Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre, where one house sustained significant damage.

The roof of the home was completely detached and thrown between 50 and 80 meters away, landing on a neighboring street. Flying debris from this roof was reported to have damaged several other properties in the vicinity.

Storm Strength and Response

Winds during the storm were recorded as exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The severe weather resulted in power outages affecting 170 homes and businesses. Western Power crews were deployed to repair damaged powerlines.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) received eight requests for assistance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

DFES South West Superintendent Matt Folini described the event as "a strong downburst through East Bunbury" and confirmed that crews were on-site assisting with temporary repairs. The storm also toppled fences and caused other minor damage in the wider Bunbury area.

Investigation into Weather System

The exact nature of the weather system is under investigation by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

BOM meteorologist Jessica Lingard stated the localized storm could have been a tornado or a microburst, which are differentiated by rotating versus straight-line winds. She noted both types of events can produce wind gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour.

The investigation will involve examining radar data and detailed damage reports to determine the precise cause of the destructive winds.
