Amazon Commits Additional $5 Billion to AI Firm Anthropic

Anthropic announced on Monday that Amazon has agreed to invest an additional $5 billion in the company. This latest commitment brings Amazon's total investment in the artificial intelligence startup to $13 billion.

This brings Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $13 billion.

In a reciprocal component of the agreement, Anthropic has agreed to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next 10 years. Furthermore, as part of the deal, Anthropic will obtain access to up to 5 gigawatts of new computing capacity to train and run its AI model, Claude.

Technical Foundation of the Partnership

The expanded partnership is built on Amazon's custom silicon. The agreement involves the use of Amazon's Graviton, a low-power CPU, and its Trainium series of AI accelerator chips.

The Anthropic deal specifically covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, though Trainium4 chips are not currently available. Trainium3 chips were released by Amazon in December. Anthropic has also secured the option to buy capacity on future Amazon chips as they become available.

Deal Structure and Market Context

The deal structure echoes an agreement Amazon struck with OpenAI two months ago. In that previous arrangement, Amazon joined a $110 billion funding round, contributing $50 billion. That round valued OpenAI at a $730 billion pre-money valuation.

Both deals were structured partly as cloud infrastructure services rather than straight cash.

This trend highlights the strategic value major cloud providers place on securing long-term commitments from leading AI labs. In a related note, venture capitalists have reportedly been offering Anthropic capital in a deal that would value it at $800 billion or more.
