Australia Announces $23 Million for Long COVID Research
The Australian government has committed up to $23 million in funding for new medical research into post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), more commonly known as long COVID.
According to the official press release, PASC is defined as a condition where symptoms of COVID-19 persist for 12 weeks or longer after the initial infection.
The research initiative will support innovation projects aimed at improving understanding and treatment of the condition.
Focus Areas of the Research Program
The funded projects will concentrate on several key scientific areas:
- Investigating the biological pathways and causes of PASC subtypes, to understand why symptoms continue in some individuals.
- Carrying out early-phase clinical research to explore potential diagnostic tools and treatments.
- Comparing the underlying causes of PASC with illnesses that occur after other viral infections, which may provide broader insights into post-viral syndromes.
