The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has opened applications for 16,000 casual field officer positions to assist with the 2026 national census. The roles are available across Australia, with work required on weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Census night is scheduled for August 11, 2026.

Pay & Conditions

The hourly pay rate for the role is $31.19, which includes a 25% casual loading, plus superannuation.

The ABS described the role as a "flexible opportunity to earn extra money and contribute to something meaningful."

Role & Responsibilities

According to the ABS job description, field officers will be the "local face" of the census and will be responsible for:

  • Completing online and virtual classroom training.
  • Using a personal compatible electronic device to manage workloads.
  • Promoting census participation and answering public questions.
  • Receiving, securely storing, and delivering census materials to households.
  • Following up with households that have not responded.
  • Conducting assisted interviews upon request.
  • Communicating regularly with a field manager and completing administrative duties.

The bureau stated that "no experience is required. All necessary training, supervision and support is provided."

Background

The national census is conducted every five years. It collects data on age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work, and education.

This data is used to estimate Australia's population, distribute government funds, and plan services.
