Tasmania Illuminates Landmarks in Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

On the evening of April 21, 2024, prominent buildings and public spaces across Tasmania were bathed in purple light. This coordinated display marked the centenary of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, who was born on April 21, 1926.

The illuminations serve as a reminder of the values she championed and the grace with which she led.

Queen Elizabeth II reigned from 1952 until her death in September 2022. She was succeeded by her son, King Charles III. During her 70-year reign, she visited Tasmania on seven separate occasions.

Illuminated Locations

The lighting tribute was visible in three major Tasmanian cities:

Hobart

  • Tasman Bridge
  • Parliament House
  • Executive Building garden lights
  • Elizabeth Mall
  • Franklin Square Fountain
  • Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre
  • Cardinal Lights at Mawson Place
  • Kennedy Lane in Salamanca
  • Rose Garden Bridge

Launceston

  • Town Hall

Devonport

  • Paranaple Convention Centre

A Legacy of Service

Deputy Premier Guy Barnett stated the lighting tribute reflects respect for the late monarch's legacy of service. He noted that Queen Elizabeth II "embodied dignity and devotion throughout a life dedicated to the Commonwealth."

The tribute provided a moment of reflection on a historic reign that spanned decades of significant change, both in Tasmania and around the world.
