Veteran Runner Returns to Boston Marathon Tradition
Mike Castle is preparing to run the Boston Marathon once again, marking a significant milestone in his long history with the event. This year’s race will be his 15th in-person Boston Marathon. If his virtual participation during the 2020 pandemic year is included, it will be his 16th overall.
Now 62 years old, Castle will compete in the T-13 para category. He describes this category as being for participants who have sufficient vision to run without a guide, but whose sight is impaired to the degree that they cannot read addresses on houses.
"It's a perfect day for a PR. I just wish I were young enough to do a PR."
Despite the playful lament about his age affecting his personal record potential, Castle’s enthusiasm for the event and the city of Boston remains undiminished. He speaks passionately about the unique atmosphere that sets the Boston Marathon apart.
Regarding the Boston Marathon, Castle stated: "The whole city is into it. It's such a tradition. You go to any other city, there'll be people cheering — but it's not really part of the fabric, the culture, of the city like it is in Boston. So I'm so happy to be back."
This deep connection to the race’s tradition and community continues to draw him back year after year, solidifying his place within the fabric of the event he clearly loves.
