The Atlanta Falcons announced on Sunday night the termination of contracts for head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot.
This decision followed the team's completion of a second consecutive 8-9 season under Morris, which marked the franchise's eighth consecutive losing season.
Leadership Changes
Raheem Morris, who had publicly expressed an expectation to return for a third season earlier the same day, concluded his tenure with a 16-18 record.
Arthur Blank, the owner of the Falcons, issued a statement indicating that new leadership was deemed necessary, as on-field results had not met organizational and fan expectations. Blank acknowledged his personal regard for both Morris and Fontenot.
Terry Fontenot was appointed general manager prior to the 2021 season. During his tenure, the team's overall record was 36-48. His 2025 draft class included notable selections such as first-round picks James Peace Jr. and Jalon Walker, who led NFL rookies in sacks, and third-round pick Xavier Watts, who led all rookies with five interceptions.
Season Performance Overview
The Falcons concluded the most recent season with four consecutive victories, resulting in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC South. Despite this late-season performance, the team had already been eliminated from playoff contention. Carolina secured the division title based on a superior divisional record.
Future Search Process
Following these personnel changes, the Falcons confirmed that the search for new leadership would commence immediately.
The organization has engaged ZRG Partners to assist in the coaching search and Sportsology, a consulting firm that previously worked with Atlanta United, to aid in the general manager search. The Falcons have not established a specific timeline for these appointments, and both searches will proceed concurrently.
Historical Context
Morris had previously served as the Falcons' interim coach for 11 games in 2020, achieving a 4-7 record after the dismissal of Dan Quinn. Arthur Smith subsequently coached the team, posting three consecutive 7-10 records from 2021 through 2023, before Morris took over as permanent head coach.
