ACT Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury Announces Departure from Politics

Shane Rattenbury, the leader of the ACT Greens, has announced he will be leaving politics after more than 17 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). He was first elected in 2008 and will submit his resignation in the coming weeks, triggering a process to fill the casual vacancy in the Assembly.

Background

Mr Rattenbury represented the electorate of Kurrajong. He served as Attorney-General from 2020 while the Greens were in a coalition with Labor. Following the 2024 election, the Greens opted to serve from the crossbench. In that October election, the party lost two of its six seats.

Statement from the Departing Leader

"It has been the privilege of my life to serve as an MLA for the ACT," Mr Rattenbury said.

He stated that a motivation for leaving was to spend more time with family. He thanked his partner, family, the people of Kurrajong, and his colleagues.

He cited climate action and the establishment of Canberra's light rail as key achievements during his tenure. Mr Rattenbury confirmed he will remain a Greens party member but will "step back" to allow space for others.

Reaction from Colleagues

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr described the retirement as "the end of an era" and acknowledged Rattenbury's significant contribution to the territory.

Canberra Liberals leader Mark Parton thanked Mr Rattenbury for his service and wished him well.

Former federal Greens leader Bob Brown, in a statement, said Rattenbury was "a person of great integrity, intelligence and compassion."

Greens MLA Jo Clay said it was an "emotional day" and highlighted Rattenbury's lasting legacy in policy areas like climate and housing.

Process for Replacement

A countback of votes from the previous election will be held to fill the vacancy, as is standard procedure in the ACT. The ACT Greens will also begin a process for members to elect a new leader.
