Indigo Girls’ Emily Saliers Announces Movement Disorder Diagnosis
Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls has announced she has been diagnosed with two movement disorders that will affect her singing voice during the duo's upcoming 2026 tour.
"Unfortunately there's no cure for these, so the honest fact is that my voice will not be what it was. That's really hard for me." — Emily Saliers
Key Details of the Diagnosis
Saliers stated she has cervical dystonia with torticollis and an essential tremor. These conditions cause involuntary muscle movements affecting her head, neck, throat, larynx, and diaphragm.
She described being unable to hold straight tones as she previously could. The conditions have no cure, and symptoms are expected to progress over time.
Medical Treatment Plan
To manage her symptoms, Saliers reported receiving multiple treatments:
- Botox injections every three months.
- Therapeutic massage, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and acupuncture.
- Working with a vocal coach who specializes in movement disorders.
Adjustments for the 2026 Tour
The Indigo Girls plan to make several adjustments to accommodate Saliers’ changing voice for their tour:
- Using digital audio tools to enhance vocal performance.
- Altering song arrangements.
- Increasing support from background singers, including Lucy Wainwright Roche.
- Selecting songs that work best with her current vocal capabilities.
Amy Ray added her perspective on moving forward: "We're doing the work because we love the music and we love you guys. And we don't wanna just say, 'Oh, we're not gonna do it anymore because of this.' We just want to keep playing and do our best."
Background and Tour Information
The Indigo Girls gained prominence in 1989 with the song "Closer to Fine." Their 2026 tour begins April 24 in Athens, Ohio, and concludes September 13 in Evanston, Illinois. They will also perform as part of Brandi Carlile's show at the Gorge in Washington on May 29.
