Dexter Lawrence Joins Cincinnati Bengals

Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has signed a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, concluding his contract negotiations with the New York Giants.

Lawrence traveled to Cincinnati on Sunday with his wife, Donna, and their seven-month-old daughter, Nella.

He arrived ahead of the Bengals' offseason workouts, which began on Monday. Notably, Lawrence's locker in Cincinnati is next to that of defensive tackle B.J. Hill, a former teammate from the Giants.

A Reunion with a Former Teammate

Lawrence and Hill played together for two seasons with the New York Giants. Their connection goes back even further, as the two first met during a college recruiting visit when Hill hosted Lawrence at North Carolina State. Lawrence ultimately attended Clemson University.

Upon finalizing his contract, Lawrence stated his first thought was about helping the team's young linebackers.

Statements from the Players

  • B.J. Hill on Dexter Lawrence: Hill described Lawrence as a "great human being" and said he "makes everybody's job easier." Hill stated that having Lawrence on the team is "a plus."
  • Dexter Lawrence on his role: Lawrence said, "I know who I am and what I bring to a team. I know me being on the field with my presence is going to make a lot of people be better." He specifically mentioned wanting to help young linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter.

Additional Context

Lawrence's arrival in Cincinnati coincides with B.J. Hill's 31st birthday, which was on Monday. Furthermore, Lawrence is already familiar with the Bengals' environment, as he is friends with wide receiver Tee Higgins, who also attended Clemson University.
