EmuDeck Unveils Playnix: A High-Performance, Linux-Based Gaming Console

The team behind the popular SteamOS emulation tool, EmuDeck, has entered the hardware arena with the announcement of the Playnix, a custom PC-based gaming console.

The Playnix console is stated to be faster than Xbox Series X and PS5 and on par with the upcoming PS5 Pro, according to its creators.

Design & Core Concept

The console takes visual inspiration from the Xbox Series S, though it is a larger device measuring 320 x 246 x 64 mm. At its heart, it is a compact PC running a custom Linux operating system, offering users an alternative to traditional closed-platform consoles.

Technical Specifications

The Playnix is built with modern PC components, offering a balance of performance and upgradability.

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 CPU with 6 cores, clocked at 3.5 GHz and a 65W TDP.
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU featuring 16 GB of dedicated VRAM.
  • Memory: 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM in a dual-channel configuration, which is user-upgradable.
  • Storage: Includes a 512 GB NVMe SSD, with a second NVMe expansion slot available for additional storage.
  • Cooling: Utilizes a combination of premium Noctua and Thermalright heatsinks and fans.
  • Power Supply: Flex 600W unit.

Connectivity & Outputs

The console is well-equipped for modern setups, including next-generation display standards.

  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.0.
  • Wired Networking: 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port.
  • USB Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, and 1x USB 3.1 Type-C.
  • Video Output: 1x HDMI 2.1 port and 1x DisplayPort 2.1 port.

Software & Performance Claims

The system ships with PlaynixOS, a custom Arc-based Linux distribution, but is not locked to it. Users have the freedom to install other operating systems, such as Windows, Bazzite, or even SteamOS.

EmuDeck makes significant performance claims for their system. They state the Playnix can play many AAA titles at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second using high settings, assisted by upscaling technologies like FSR or XeSS. The product page cites Cyberpunk 2077 as a title that can run under these conditions.

Pricing, Availability & Package

The Playnix console carries a retail price of €1139. The initial production batch has already sold out. Each unit comes with a two-year warranty and includes the console itself, a 4K HDMI cable, a power cable, and an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controller.

Context

The article reporting on the Playnix notes that its specifications meet the requirements for Valve's "Steam Machine" verified badge, positioning it as a capable living-room PC gaming solution.
