Kevin Durant Ruled Out for Game 1 Against Lakers

Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant will not play in Game 1 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night. The decision was announced by Rockets coach Ime Udoka, who cited a bruised right knee Durant sustained during a practice session on Wednesday.

Imaging showed "nothing major" but Udoka described the knee as "very tender and tough to bend in certain ways."

The team is hopeful that Durant's absence will be limited to just one game. In his place, rookie Reed Sheppard will start for the fifth-seeded Rockets.

Injury Background

The injury occurred when Durant bumped knees with a teammate during practice. He was subsequently added to the official injury report on Friday.

Durant, 37, is the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history and averaged 26.0 points per game this season, his first with Houston. This postseason marks his 14th career trip to the NBA playoffs.

Lakers Also Shorthanded

The Rockets' opponent, the fourth-seeded Lakers, will also be missing key players. Both Luka Dončić (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) are out for Game 1.

Both Lakers players were injured on April 2. Coach JJ Redick stated the team's goal is to extend its playoff run to potentially create a window for their return.

Historical Playoff Matchup

This series renewal carries significant historical weight, as it marks the fourth career postseason meeting between Kevin Durant and LeBron James. The two legends have previously faced each other in three NBA Finals.
