AI Chatbot Aids in Diagnosis After Years of Uncertainty

A 23-year-old woman from Wales received a diagnosis of hereditary spastic paraplegia after using the AI chatbot ChatGPT. The diagnosis was later confirmed through genetic testing ordered by her doctors following her suggestion.

Phoebe Tesoriere, from Cardiff, had experienced symptoms including seizures, falls, and balance problems for several years. She is now using a wheelchair and managing her condition with physical therapy.

According to Tesoriere, she turned to ChatGPT after feeling "lonely" and receiving repeated anxiety diagnoses. The chatbot suggested hereditary spastic paraplegia as a possibility.

A Long History of Symptoms

Tesoriere reported having a limp throughout her childhood and underwent operations as an infant for being born without a hip socket.

At age 19, she collapsed from a seizure. Medical professionals attributed this to anxiety, a diagnosis Tesoriere stated she did not agree with as she had no prior history of anxiety.

In 2022, she was diagnosed with epilepsy and prescribed medication, but her symptoms reportedly worsened. Doctors later diagnosed her with Todd's paralysis.

In January 2025, she fell down stairs and was hospitalized for three months. Tests conducted during this period were inconclusive.

Seven months later, she experienced a seizure that resulted in a three-day coma. Medical professionals again told her the symptoms were related to anxiety.

The Path to a Confirmed Diagnosis

After the AI chatbot suggested hereditary spastic paraplegia, she brought this possibility to her doctors. They then ordered the genetic test that confirmed the condition.

A spokesperson for the Cardiff and Vale Health Board stated: "We are sorry to hear about Phoebe’s experience while in our care."

As a result of her condition, Tesoriere can no longer work as a teacher and is now pursuing a master's degree in psychology.
