Major Windows 11 Start Menu Update to Offer More Control
Microsoft is developing a significant update for the Windows 11 Start menu, promising users greater control over its appearance and functionality. This update is part of the previously confirmed development of a WinUI 3-based Start menu.
The new Start menu will offer more advanced customization options accessible through the Windows Settings app.
Enhanced Customization Features
Users will gain the ability to manually choose between small or large Start menu layouts. Currently, Windows automatically selects the layout based on screen size, removing user choice.
Furthermore, users will have the ability to toggle off entire sections of the menu they do not use. This includes:
- The recommended feed
- The pinned apps section
- The "all apps" list
Focus on Performance
Sources indicate the new Start menu will be faster and more responsive than the current version.
One key goal is to maintain responsiveness even when the system is under heavy load, addressing current delays that can occur when the CPU is busy.
Search functionality within the Start menu will also see improvements, allowing users to type quickly without missing keystrokes even under system load.
Broader Initiative
These Start menu improvements are part of a larger Microsoft initiative codenamed Windows K2. This project aims to address user pain points and make Windows 11 a faster, more stable, and user-friendly platform.
