Georgia Walker Appointed Inaugural Coach of Tasmania Devils VFLW Team
Georgia Walker has been named the first-ever coach of the Tasmania Devils VFLW team. Her background includes two games as a player for Collingwood's AFLW team and a captaincy at the Southern Saints. Her coaching experience features roles as head coach of the GWS Giants Academy team and as a backline coach for the GWS Giants AFLW team.
"I call myself a psychic medium, I have a business, I read tarot, I practice reiki, I can connect to spirit."
Background and Coaching Philosophy
Walker says she has been able to connect with spirits since childhood. Her playing career ended due to injuries and concussions, prompting her move into coaching. She states that her spiritual work began to blend with her football coaching while at the Southern Saints, where she collaborated with another mindfulness coach who is also a psychic medium.
Regarding her approach to coaching, Walker emphasizes empathy and understanding the person behind the player. "With players, by me understanding and having more empathy to them as a person, allows me to coach them better and get the best out of them," she said.
She incorporates practices like journaling and affirmations into her work with the team. "It's bringing those everyday skills into their world," Walker explained. However, she notes she avoids using her psychic abilities to influence football outcomes, citing a belief in karma.
Perspectives from the Team
Players and staff have described Walker as bringing a unique and energetic presence to the club.
Tasmania Devils vice-captain Georgia Nicholas described Walker as having "a unique personality" and "high energy." Nicholas also mentioned that Walker had read her tarot cards, suggesting new job opportunities.
Newly appointed Devils captain Meghan Gaffney, who knew Walker from their time at the GWS Giants, said Walker is "one of the most down-to-earth people I've met." Gaffney added that Walker focuses on individual enjoyment and fostering off-field connections within the team.
Additional Context
Walker's first pre-season with the Devils is currently underway. During Gather Round weekend, she was called up as an assistant coach for the VFL women's representative team.
Walker states she encourages curiosity about her spiritual practices but does not force the topic on players or staff.
