Gigabyte Announces New Gaming PSU Series with Safety Feature for GPU Power Cables
The new power supply units feature a technology called T-Guard, designed to address safety concerns related to the 12V-2×6 power cable used with high-wattage graphics cards.
Gigabyte has announced a new series of Gaming power supply units (PSUs). The series introduces a proprietary safety technology aimed at mitigating risks associated with the power cables for modern, high-performance graphics cards.
Core Safety Feature: T-Guard
The T-Guard feature uses active thermal monitoring on the 12V-2×6 cable. This system is designed to detect potential overheating issues before they cause damage.
If the system detects that a temperature threshold has been exceeded or identifies an abnormal load, it intervenes by reducing power delivery to the graphics card. The power is not completely cut, allowing users to save work and shut down the system safely.
Design and Specifications
For easier installation, the 12V-2×6 connectors on these PSUs have color-coded pins to indicate if the cable is not properly seated.
The power supplies will be available in three capacities: 750W, 850W, and 1,000W, and will come in both black and white color variants.
They have received Cybenetics ETA Platinum and LAMBDA A+ ratings, certifying high electrical efficiency and very low noise operation. Internal components include 100% Japanese capacitors and a 135mm Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan that can stop spinning under low system loads. The products are backed by a 10-year warranty.
Background on the 12V-2×6 Cable Issue
The development of this safety feature is a direct response to widely reported problems. The 12V-2×6 cable design has been associated with incidents of melting and burning, which have caused damage to graphics cards and PSUs.
Industry reports have suggested that contributing factors include improper cable installation, as well as concerns that the wire gauge and connector size may be insufficient to safely sustain the up to 600W load demanded by some high-end GPUs. Gigabyte's T-Guard is one of several solutions developed by various brands in response to these reports.
