Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Signs Two-Year Contract Extension

View source

Following a period of uncertainty about his future with the Golden State Warriors, head coach Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year contract extension, according to multiple sources. The deal keeps Kerr among the highest-paid coaches in the NBA.

Steve Kerr will remain with the Golden State Warriors after agreeing to a two-year extension, keeping him as one of the league's top-paid coaches.

Contract and Decision Timeline

After the Warriors were eliminated from the NBA play-in tournament with a 111-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, Kerr stated that his contract had expired and he was uncertain about returning. He said he planned to take one to two weeks to consider his future before meeting with Warriors controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy.

Following those discussions about the franchise's short- and long-term plans, Kerr agreed to a two-year extension. Reports indicate he remains the league's highest-paid coach, though his salary may be slightly reduced from the $17.5 million he earned last season. Kerr stated he did not want to leave players Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

Kerr's Statements on the Process

During the period of uncertainty, Kerr made several statements about his future:

  • "I don't know what's going to happen. I still love coaching. "
  • "These jobs all have an expiration date. There's a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas. And, if that's the case, then I will be nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise."
  • Kerr stated he would not coach another NBA team next season.
  • He described coaching Stephen Curry for the remainder of Curry's career as "part of the equation" in his decision.

Player Reactions

Warriors guard Stephen Curry said: "I want Coach to be happy. I want him to be excited about the job. I want him to believe he's the right guy for the job." Curry also stated he plans to play for multiple more seasons and would be interested in a contract extension with the Warriors.

Forward Draymond Green said: "I just don't deal with change well. I don't love it. So, I don't want to think about that. I hope that's not the case."

Both Curry and Green have one year remaining on their contracts. Green could become a free agent if he declines his $27.6 million player option.

Kerr's Coaching Record

Steve Kerr has been the Warriors' head coach for 12 seasons. His overall coaching record with the franchise is:

  • Regular season: 604-353
  • Playoffs: 152-104
  • NBA Championships: 4 (during his tenure)

Under his leadership, the Warriors reached the NBA Finals in six of his first seven seasons. The team finished the 2024-25 season with a 37-45 record and did not qualify for the playoffs. They have not won an NBA title since 2022 and have missed the playoffs entirely once in the last four years.

Kerr also coached the United States men's basketball team to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
