Police Investigate String of Early Morning Incidents in Sydney's Southwest

Police are investigating a series of incidents across Sydney's southwestern suburbs in the early hours of Saturday morning, with authorities suggesting the events may be linked to organized crime.

Timeline of Events

The first report came in at approximately 2:00 AM, with police responding to reports of gunfire at a barber shop in Casula.

Around 4:00 AM, an alleged arson attack was reported at a café in South Wentworthville.

At 7:45 AM, officers were called to Fairmont Street in Merrylands after further reports of gunfire at a home.

A fourth scene was established at 8:15 AM on Woodstock Street in Guildford, also following reports of shots fired at a residence.

No injuries were reported in connection with any of the shootings.

Police Response and Arrests

Following the incidents, police pursued a vehicle which was later found abandoned in Smithfield. Two people, aged 17 and 21, were arrested. A firearm was allegedly seized.

No charges have been filed in relation to these specific incidents as of this report. Investigations are ongoing.

Official Statements

Detective Superintendent Jason Box indicated that police are examining connections between the alleged attacks.

"Some of the targeted premises are known to be linked to the Alameddine crime family," Superintendent Box stated. He added that the first incident may have prompted the subsequent three acts.

Superintendent Box issued a strong warning about the potential for escalating violence.

"Such acts of violence have the potential to lead to retaliation and that offenders risk becoming victims themselves."

He noted that the threat of retaliation could extend beyond the offenders to include their families and associates, and may persist even if offenders are incarcerated.

Background: Taskforce Falcon

The Alameddine crime family is considered by police to be a key player in Sydney's drug trade, operating an organized crime network in the city's west.

NSW Police established Taskforce Falcon last year to address violence connected to internal conflicts within the Alameddine network. According to Superintendent Box, the taskforce has made over 400 arrests for serious offenses, resulting in more than 4,000 charges.

Superintendent Box stated that Taskforce Falcon will be on high alert for further attacks following Saturday's incidents.
