Live-Action "The Phantom" Television Series in Development
A new live-action television series based on Lee Falk's classic comic strip "The Phantom" is currently in development. Filmmaker Reginald Hudlin is attached to direct and produce the project, which is being developed at King Features, the comic strip's home and a subsidiary of Hearst.
"The development of a live-action series for the iconic comic strip 'The Phantom' marks a pivotal expansion to meet the current cultural zeitgeist for this brand," said King Features president C.J. Kettler.
A 90-Year Legacy
"The Phantom" comic strip first debuted 90 years ago, and the character is credited as the first costumed superhero in comics. The franchise maintains a robust global readership of more than 29 million, with key markets in The Nordics, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, the U.K., Europe, and India.
The brand is experiencing renewed activity: a new comic book series launched from Mad Cave Comics in 2025, with further releases planned over the next two years. Hearst has also indicated that "The Phantom" will have a significant immersive location-based entertainment experience, with details to be announced later this year.
The Creative Team
Kettler expressed confidence in the series' direction, highlighting the chosen director's background:
"By partnering with award-nominated director Reginald Hudlin, who possesses a deep reverence for the comic industry and source material itself, we are confident this adaptation will meet the high expectations of both longtime and new fans globally."
Reginald Hudlin previously wrote "Black Panther" issues for Marvel Comics and is now co-owner of the comic book company Milestone Media. A feature film based on Milestone's Static Shock character is also currently in development.
