China Issues Travel Advice for Citizens Visiting the United States
China's foreign ministry has issued specific travel advice for its citizens planning to visit the United States, following recent incidents at a major U.S. airport.
The ministry specifically recommended avoiding entry through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Details of the Incident
According to a post by China Consular Affairs on X, approximately 20 Chinese scholars with valid visas were recently denied entry after what was described as "unreasonable inspection" by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at that airport. The scholars were traveling to attend an academic conference.
Chinese authorities characterized the CBP personnel's actions as "malicious questioning."
Official Guidance from China
The foreign ministry advised travelers to familiarize themselves with U.S. entry regulations and be prepared for their visit. Chinese authorities stated that travelers should approach U.S. visits with a "mindset of safety and security."
"If you encounter questioning from U.S. enforcement personnel, you should deal with it calmly and rationally," the ministry's translated guidance stated.
Comparison with Other Travel Advisories
The Australian government's Smartraveller advice for travel to the United States does not include a specific warning against travel, instead advising Australians to exercise "normal safety precautions."
The Australian advice notes that "U.S. authorities have broad powers to decide if you're eligible to enter and may determine that you are inadmissible for any reason under U.S. law."
For travel to China, the Australian government advises its citizens to "exercise a high degree of caution," citing risks including "arbitrary detention, exit bans or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws."
