New National Research Centre Aims to Tackle Cancer Outcome Disparities
The New South Wales government has announced the establishment of a new national research centre focused on reducing disparities in cancer outcomes. The Australian Centre for Cancer Equity will be led by three founding health and research organizations and aims to translate data-driven research into practical improvements in care access and delivery.
Announcement and Founders
The Australian Centre for Cancer Equity was announced by David Harris, the New South Wales Minister for Medical Research. The centre was founded through the leadership of three organizations:
- Cancer Institute NSW
- South Western Sydney Local Health District
- The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research
These three entities are described as the foundational partners for the new centre.
Purpose and Focus
The centre's stated purpose is to address inequities in cancer outcomes across the population. According to the announcement, these disparities are influenced by a range of socio-economic and demographic factors, including:
- Geographic location
- Income level
- Education
- Cultural background
- Language
Tracey O'Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, stated that equity is one of the three core principles of the NSW Cancer Plan. O'Brien described the establishment of the centre as representing "equity in action."
Planned Activities and Approach
The centre plans to conduct research that is both data-driven and centred on community needs. The stated goals of this research are to:
- Improve access to cancer care
- Strengthen understanding of cancer inequities
- Support the delivery of more equitable cancer care
The overarching aim is to translate research findings into real-world impact for patients and the healthcare system.
Structure and Collaboration
While the three founding organizations provide the foundation, the centre is intended to operate as a collaborative hub. Its structure is designed to bring together researchers, health professionals, and other collaborators from across New South Wales and Australia to work on its stated goals.
