Raiders to Hold Open QB Competition, Emphasize Readiness Over Draft Status

Las Vegas Raiders General Manager John Spytek has stated that the team's starting quarterback position will be determined by an open competition before the regular season begins. He said the decision will be based on merit and that a rookie, including a potential first overall draft pick, would not be automatically named the starter if not deemed ready. General Manager John Spytek named three quarterbacks who will compete for the starting role:

• Kirk Cousins, a veteran signed by the Raiders during the offseason.
• Aidan O'Connell, a second-year player returning to the team.
• Fernando Mendoza, a rookie quarterback prospect.

"Ultimately, this is a meritocracy, and the best guy will play," Spytek said.

He added, "It's just really hard to play really well at a young age, but we've seen plenty of quarterbacks do it recently."

Readiness Over Rushing

Spytek outlined a patient approach to integrating a young quarterback, stressing that readiness is the primary factor.

"We all want to see the young guys play, we want to see them play well, but we don't want to put anybody out there, regardless of the position, who's not ready," he stated.

He cited the significant transition from college to the NFL, noting challenges beyond physical skill. "It's a hard position to play, and there's a lot to learn beyond throwing the football and being a good teammate," Spytek said.

He elaborated on specific adjustments, such as learning to run a huddle, call cadences from under center, and master a complex NFL playbook, contrasting these with common college offensive systems that operate primarily from the shotgun formation.

Spytek concluded, "When you can be patient — and we all understand there's not a ton of patience in the job that we chose here — but if you can find some level of patience and put people in positions when they're ready, that's the best way forward."

Potential Outcomes and Historical Context

Spytek indicated that if Mendoza demonstrates he is ready during training camp and preseason, he will start the regular season opener. If not, the team has Cousins available for that scenario.

This approach contrasts with recent NFL history. The last six quarterbacks selected with the first overall pick in the draft have started Week One of their rookie seasons. The most recent first overall quarterback to begin his career as a backup was Baker Mayfield in 2018.
