Starbucks Launches Drink Inspiration Tool on ChatGPT Platform

Starbucks announced on Wednesday the launch of a beta application within the ChatGPT platform. The tool is designed to provide customers with inspiration for their drink orders as part of the company's broader "Back to Starbucks" turnaround strategy in the United States.

"Customers aren't always starting with a menu. They're starting with a feeling... We wanted to meet customers right in that moment of inspiration and make it easier than ever to find a drink that fits." — Paul Riedel, Starbucks senior vice president of digital and loyalty.

How the Application Works

The beta application functions as follows:

  • Customers must first enable the Starbucks app through the dedicated directory within ChatGPT.
  • To interact with the feature, users must include "@Starbucks" in their text prompt to the chatbot.
  • Based on the customer's prompt, the tool suggests drink options.
  • Users can customize these suggested orders and select a preferred Starbucks location for pickup.

A critical limitation is that the transaction cannot be completed within ChatGPT. Customers must use the official Starbucks mobile application or website to finalize and pay for their order.

Strategic and Business Context

The launch is positioned within Starbucks' ongoing "Back to Starbucks" strategy. This initiative includes several operational changes such as adding seating back to cafes, trimming menus, and reintroducing tiers to its customer loyalty program.

The company reported rising customer transactions in its fiscal first quarter, which ended on December 28. This increase followed two years of declining store traffic.

Starbucks has previously emphasized drink discovery as a method for engaging consumers, particularly those in Generation Z. The company's analysis indicates this demographic shows a greater preference for unique beverages at U.S. restaurant chains compared to older generations.

Related Technology Initiatives

This is not Starbucks' first project involving generative artificial intelligence. In 2023, the company unveiled Green Dot Assist, an AI assistant created with Microsoft Azure's OpenAI platform to help baristas with tasks like recipe recall and inventory management.

Other consumer-facing companies, including Walmart, Etsy, and Booking.com, have also been testing shopping and purchasing features through ChatGPT's interface.
