Google Releases New Android Canary Build 2604 for Developers

The Android Canary channel is Google's experimental development track where features are under active development and testing.

Google has released a new experimental Android build for developers, designated as Canary build 2604 (ZP11.260320.007). This update follows the previous Canary build, 2603, which was released on March 19. Multiple sources report that build 2604 was released earlier in the month than the previous build's schedule.

Build Details and Device Availability

The update is currently available for the Pixel 8 series and newer devices. Images for several older Pixel models are scheduled for a later release.

Device Availability:

  • Currently Available: Pixel 8 series and newer devices.
  • Scheduled for Later Release: Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.

Google advises against installing Canary builds on primary devices due to potential instability and unexpected issues.

It is important to note that once a Canary build is installed, rolling back to a stable version of Android is not straightforward. To stop receiving Canary over-the-air (OTA) updates and return to a stable version, a user must flash a non-Canary build, a process that requires a full data wipe of the device.

Reported User Interface Changes

The build includes modifications to the user interface, such as changes to notification and app shortcut menus. According to observations highlighted by Google's Mishaal Rahman, some of these changes had been initially introduced in the previous Canary build, 2603.

The specific interface changes reported include:

  • Notification Clear Message: When a user clears all notifications, a new message reading "You're all caught up" appears. This replaces the previous text, which stated "No notifications."

  • App Icon Menu Changes: Long-pressing an app icon now opens a more compact menu.

    • Shortcuts within this menu are initially collapsed and hidden behind a new "Shortcuts" toggle.
    • After expanding the shortcuts, a separate actions menu is also collapsed by default and can be revealed by selecting an "Actions" toggle.
