Warner Bros. Unveils Film Slate Through 2028 at CinemaCon

Warner Bros. presented its upcoming film slate at the CinemaCon industry convention, detailing a schedule of releases through 2028. The studio announced the creation of a new specialized distribution label, confirmed numerous release dates, and previewed footage from several high-profile projects. The presentation included separate showcases from the distributor Neon.

Studio Announcements and Release Schedule

Warner Bros. announced plans to increase its annual theatrical output. The studio stated it will release 14 films in 2026, an increase from 11 in 2025, with plans for as many as 18 releases in 2027.

A new specialized film label, named Clockwork, was announced. The label’s first confirmed release is director Sean Baker’s film Ti Amo!, scheduled for 2027.

Confirmed Film Release Dates

The following specific release dates were announced:

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum – December 17, 2027. A cast announcement was made via a sizzle reel.
  • Practical Magic 2 – September 11, 2026. The film is directed by Susanne Bier and stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
  • The Flood – August 11, 2028. This is an original sci-fi film written and directed by Zach Cregger.
  • Gladys – September 8, 2028. Described as a prequel to Weapons, the project also involves Zach Cregger.

Warner Bros. 2027 Film Slate Preview

A sizzle reel highlighted numerous films slated for release in 2027, including:

  • Remain, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
  • Panic Carefully, directed by Sam Esmail.
  • Bad Fairies, an animated musical.
  • A Minecraft Movie 2.
  • An Ocean’s franchise prequel film starring Margot Robbie.
  • Superman: Man of Tomorrow, a sequel. Adria Arjona was announced to star as the character Maxima.
  • Evil Dead Wrath, another film in the Evil Dead franchise.
  • Shiver, a shark movie starring Keanu Reeves and directed by Tim Miller.

Other confirmed projects in development include a new film from director Baz Luhrmann and an untitled film from Taylor Sheridan, referred to as F.A.S.T..

Footage Previews and Filmmaker Statements

Warner Bros. Presentation

  • Digger: Footage was shown from the film directed by Alejandro Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, who plays an aging oil tycoon. Cruise described the film as “wild” and “funny.” Iñárritu stated the film is about “an uncontrollable, delusional need to control things.”
  • The Great Beyond: A teaser was shown for the J.J. Abrams-directed film starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega. Abrams said the film is about “reconnecting with that sense of wonder and possibility we had when we kids.”
  • Dune: Part Three: The first seven minutes of the film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, were shown.
  • Clayface: A teaser was shown for this DC film directed by James Watkins.
  • Mortal Kombat II: New Line Cinema showed a scene from the film.
  • Practical Magic 2: A teaser was shown. Nicole Kidman stated the film picks up with the characters and includes elements from the original.

Neon Presentation

The distributor Neon held a separate presentation, showcasing first looks at:

  • Leviticus, a horror film that premiered at Sundance.
  • A Place In Hell, a thriller directed by Chloe Domont.
  • Hope, a Korean-language film directed by Na Hong-jin, starring Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. A teaser was shown. The film is scheduled to premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Additional Statements and Notes

  • J.J. Abrams acknowledged Warner Bros. executives for being part of what he described as an “era” of the studio embracing original films.
  • Director Boots Riley, while promoting his film I Love Boosters, commented on the relationship between cinema and entertainment, stating he believes a movie “can push cinema AND make an amusement park ride.”
  • Patton Oswalt, who hosted the Warner Bros. presentation, stated he saw 117 movies in theaters last year and expressed interest in playing the character Mister Mxyzptlk in a Superman film.
  • Nancy Meyers’ next film does not have a confirmed title.
  • Warner Bros. Animation distributed promotional wigs themed to The Cat in the Hat.

Projects Not Featured

No new information or footage was presented for The Batman Part II, which is scheduled for an October 2027 release, or for Gremlins 3, scheduled for a November 2027 release.
